General Presentation:

Nancy Morejón (Havana - August 7th, l944 - ), one of the most remarkable voices of contemporary Cuban poetry, has received major distinctions inside and outside of our continent. A translator and essayist, she has additionally acquired an inestimable prestige dedicating herself to the study of Nicolás Guillén works and Caribbean literatures.

Main works

She published her first book Mutismos/Mutismes(Editions El Puente) in l962 and her most recent Carbones silvestres/Wild charcoals in 2006, a year in which the XVth  Havana International BookFair was dedicated to her with Ángel Augier. Her poetic works include more than twenty titles,  the most remarkable of which being: Where the Island Sleeps Like Wing (bilingual anthology, l985); Piedra pulida / Neolithic stone ( l986 ); Botella al mar / a bottle at sea (anthology, l997), Richard trajo su flauta y otros poemas/ Richard brought his flute and other poems ( 2000 ), which was selected by Mario Benedetti who also wrote the foreword for Editorial Visor, of Madrid. Other remarkable works: Cuerda veloz/ Fast Rope ( 2002 ), of Editoriale Letras Cubanas, Looking Within / Mirar adentro / (at 2003), of the University of Wayne State, Detroit, Michigan with introduction, selection and comments by Juanamaría Cordones-Cook, as well as the poetic Anthology ( 1962-2000 ) with a selection and foreword by Gerardo Fulleda's  published by Editorial Monteávila of Caracas ( 2006 ). Piedra pulida/Neolithic stone, Elogio paisaje / Eulogy and landscape and Quinta de los Molinos (a park in Havana of the same name) were awarded the Critics' Prize in l986, l997 and 2000, respectively.

A permanent member of the Jury of the Prix Carbet de la Caraïbe. National  Literature Prize in 200l. The University of New York conferred to her the Yari-Yari Prize of Contemporary Poetry for her entire work in 2004. In August, 2006, during  the VL edition of the Festival Nights of Poetry, she received the Corona de Oro de Struga1 / Gold crown 2006 of Macedonia already proclaimed on March 21st, 2006, at the UNESCO Office in Paris, on the occasion of the World Poetry Day. In May 2007, during the XIIth International Poetry Festival in Havana, she received the Rafael Alberti Prize2. Throughout her professional career innumerable national and international prizes and distinctions were awarded to her, including the Order of Merit by the French Republic and the replica of Máximo Gómez's machete, among others. A permanent member of the Cuban Academy of Language (Regional education authority) since 1999. At the XVIIth  international Bookfair of Havana she received the Escritora Gallega UniversalUniversal Galician Writer Prize granted by the Association of the Galician Writers 2008. She obtained the Prize of Honor at the Festival Cubadisco 2008. In 2008, the University of Salamanca recompiled a large selection of her poetic work in the anthology El huerto magnífico of todos / The magnificent kitchen garden of us all that won the Alfredo Pérez Alencart. In 2009, she was awarded an Honoraris Causa Doctorate by the Cergy-Pontoise university of Paris. At present, she is working as a Deputy of la Casa de las Américas and was also been elected President of the UNEAC Writers Association. In 2010  Carbones silvestres/ Wild Coals was published in a bilingual edition translated in German by Ineke Phaf-Rheinberger and Peñalver 51 was published by Editorial Letras Cubanas de La Havana.
