>General Presentation:

James Noël, poet-glazier, was born in 1978, in Hinche, Haiti. He is today considered as a major voice of contemporary Haitian literature. He has published several books of poetry and obtained numerous distinctions, including, among others, the CNL grant in 2007 and the Fètkann Prize in 2008.

He is often invited to participate in various international festivals and book fairs and is well accustomed to sharing his “words that are sharpened to cut”.

While he is often fêted in public, he also encourages others to crate and has hosted poetry-writing workshops all over the world – Port-au-Prince, France, New Caledonia, French Guiana, etc.

His poem Bon Nouvèl inspired a short film by Dominique Batraville and Kendy Vérilus – La danse des pieds – and was adapted to music in 2005 by the famous musician Wooly Saint Louis Jean, for his Quand la parole se fait chanson album. In 2011, he will be the invited guest of the two-week Francophonie celebrations in Haiti.

To complete the resplendent portrait of this active scribe, it should be noted that James Noel has collaborated with journals such as Point-Barre, Casa de las Americas, La sœur de l'ange, Exit, Défense de la langue française (of the French Academy), etc. His work appears in the anthology L’année poétique 2008 (Seghers) and he is listed in 144 poètes autour du monde, (Seghers, 2009).

He has received many distinctions, including the Fètkann prize (Mémoire du Sud and L’Humanité, 2008) and a 20 000 euro grant from the Regional Council of the Île-de-France in 2009.

His poetry, with its committed cry to love and violent rage, conveys what he likes to call a “killer metaphor”, as can be observed in the poem Notre siamoise différence.
