2nd edition of the international Caribbean Writers Congress

In partnership with the Caribbean Writers Association presided by Roger TOUMSON, Academic Essay writer and poet,

the 2nd edition of the international Caribbean Writers Congress will be held at the Creole Beach Hotel in Gosier (GUADELOUPE) April 6-9, 2011

Through this major international event the Guadeloupe Regional Council aims to further promote the creation of a Caribbean cultural and literary space, for shared knowledge, memories, and experiences. Co-sponsored by the Caribbean Writers Association, this second edition of the International Caribbean Writers Congress is entitled: « Circumstances, Conditions and Issues in Caribbean literary creation».

 

Prestigious guests

This year, the honorary presidency has been given to the notorious Cuban poet and essayist, Roberto Fernandez RETAMAR, and the the guest of honor will be the writer and playwright Marcio Veloz MAGGIOLO, one of the renown contemporary authors from the Dominican Republic.

 

Proceedings

The Proceedings of the 1st edition held in 2008 will be presented at the official launching of this major event, next Friday, March 11th, at 10:00 am.

A new literary prize

This second shall also launch the first Guadeloupe Regional Council Caribbean literary prize intended to reward a major Caribbean literary work.

Major meetings

Landmark events shall punctuate this edition :

- The inaugural conference on Wednesday, April 6, with a major tribute to Martinique Edouard Glissant, who recently passed away.

- The conferences, seminars and round tables on Thursday7, and Friday 8 will be devoted to various issues, including : interaction in the Caribbean between the French, English, Spanish and Dutch Caribbean literary fields; the literary critic; reading, writing, and publishing in the Caribbean environment; the future of the world of books and literary creation in the Caribbean environment…

- The visual art in meeting with the written word and painting evening on Thursday, April7, at the La Maison des Ecrivains, run by Simone Schwarz-Bart in Goyave.

- The inauguration on Saturday, April 9, of a major collection of literary works donated by La Casa de Las Americas to the Bettino Lara Media-Library for its 50th anniversary ….

Major visibility for the youth

Through the partnership implemented between the Caribbean Writers Association, the Education Board and the UAG large spaces have been dedicated to interaction between high school students and visiting writers throughout the event.
